Book Review - The Martian Chronicles by Andy Weir

It's a great book that is similar to Castaway only its on Mars and without the volleyball. :)

I liked this book a lot. It really had a similar feel to the Apollo 13 movie. The thing is, this was a novel that didn't have any facts from something that actually happened in real life for it to be based off of. It really felt like it did, though. The author seemed to take the science of it way too far for my liking, but I only docked half a star for that. The other half star I docked for monotonous feeling about three fourths of the way through. Of course, he may have wanted it that way to give us the feeling that we were actually there. I'm not looking for a documentary, but I'm sure other readers would probably dock him for not having that slower paced area in there (screwed if you do, screwed if you don't). Kind of like when the movie Castaway got kind of boring. It gets boring being stranded all by yourself.

Anyway, I really liked the book. I enjoy the more fantastical books in science fiction, so any other book that attempted this story would have probably gotten only three stars. I could probably sit here and nit-pick some other things in the book, but I won't. This is the only book of its kind (that I've seen). In any case, kudos to the writer. It was a good enough book to keep me up until three in the morning. :) I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
